CR22

2026

CR22 marks a monumental milestone as Cardiff University’s first ever electric Formula Student race car. After 22 years of competing with internal combustion engines, the team officially made the electric transition-the culmination of over three years of intensive planning, research, and development.

CR22 retains a light, rigid aluminum honeycomb front monocoque structure, paired with a completely brand new rear spaceframe. Cut and welded in house by our team, the new spaceframe was engineered to house our high voltage system and incorporates custom mounting hardpoints for our new Emrax electric motor.
The heart of CR22 is its high performance 600V accumulator, designed and assembled by the team. Providing extensive power delivery, the pack ensures we can comfortably complete a full dynamic endurance event while allowing for faster turnarounds between charges during testing.
Up front and at the rear, new custom wishbones and suspension components were manufactured and welded in house, featuring newly optimised geometry tailored to the EV platform.
CR22 debuts a ground up redesign of our full aerodynamics package, including a brand new front wing, sidepods, and rear wing. To comply with updated overall height restriction rules, the rear wing was designed with a sleek, lower profile to significantly reduce drag. Redesigning our EV cooling setup eliminated the need for traditional side mounted radiators. We capitalised on this by adopting a sleek "zero-pod" sidepod concept, yielding substantial weight savings and enhanced aerodynamic efficiency. Utilising complex element geometry, our front wing was completely re-engineered to be both lighter and stronger than previous iterations, featuring integrated Kevlar construction for extra durability.

Due to the immense engineering complexity of constructing our first electric vehicle, the team made the strategic decision to focus exclusively on Formula Student UK (FSUK), reallocating funds usually spent on overseas competitions directly into the car’s build and development.
Determined to make an impact at Silverstone, we presented CR22 for accumulator scrutineering the moment it opened on day one. The team successfully passed Technical, Safety, and Chassis scrutineering with ease. In accumulator scrutineering, we completed 98% of the stringent process before being held back by minor technical faults, ultimately preventing us from taking to the track this year.
Despite not running dynamic events, we are immensely proud of what was achieved. Developing CR22 presented a challenge unlike any other in Cardiff Racing's history, but it leaves us with a solid engineering foundation and puts us in a prime position to clear scrutineering and hit the track running next season.

The creation of CR22 would not have been possible without the continued dedication of our partners, advisors, and team members. A massive thank you to all of our incredible sponsors-without your generous support, resources, and technical backing, CR22 could not have been built.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the Cardiff University staff and students who offered their expertise, facilities, and hands on assistance throughout the whole process.
To our graduating members and team leads who devoted countless hours, personal sacrifices, and relentless leadership throughout the year - thank you for steering us through this historic transition.
Finally, Alastair Clarke our faculty advisor who had been there whenever and wherever we needed him. His positive outlook towards the team in such a demanding year held our spirits high and we could not have reached where we are now without him.
